Respeito e Amor ao Próximo - Love and Respect to Others

A maioria do povo brasileiro ainda não conhece o significado correto da expressão “amar o próximo como a si mesmo”. O mau uso da palavra, amar, pela nossa arte e pela nossa mídia, que insiste em relacioná-la tão freqüentemente ao namoro e ao sexo, acaba nos confundindo. No entanto, mesmo antes da era cristã, amar era se relacionar com total igualdade de consideração, sem superioridade ou inferioridade e com tolerância às normais falhas e diferenças dos seres humanos.

Amar o próximo (na sua definição mais simples) é não lhe fazer coisas que nós não gostamos que sejam feitas conosco, e só fazermos o que concordarmos com que também sejam feitas conosco. O que nós não gostamos de receber, o nosso semelhante também não deve gostar. Se respeitar-mos essa regra, nos torna­remos cooperadores um do outro ao invés de destruidores, um do outro, como tem acontecido tão freqüentemente na nossa sociedade. Precisamos entender melhor o que é amor fraternal para colhermos boa convivência pessoal, familiar e social.

É importante entendermos, entretanto, que o sentimento de amor não nasce do nada, não nasce de si mesmo, ele só nasce quando se tem verdadeiro esclarecimento e pleno entendimento sobre a respectiva situação ou pessoa em questão. Na verdade, o amor se cultiva com boa educação, muita informação e adequados esclare­cimentos, humanos, sociais e religiosos. Povo sem informação, sem discernimento da verdade e sem temor a Deus, dificilmente consegue desenvolver o verdadeiro amor ao próximo.

People without information, without discernment of truth and without fear of God, can hardly develop true love of neighbor.
